Once Alone..

(My muse has locked itself in the closet and it wont come out! *pouts*)

The charcoal wolf basked in the glow of the moon. He was lying on his back, legs folded and above him. His gaze turned from the moon to the fringe of trees that rounded the pond. The remains of a small rabbit lay a little ways off, not snack, but not a meal, more like tea time, except without tea.

Raniks rolled over and rose to his feet, stretching luxuriously. He stood fully and flexed his pads for a moment. he gazed out at the waters of the pond, dancing with insects and other creatures. Away up stream he could here an ominous rumbled of where the stream must have started. Raniks sank to his stomach again and lay in the grass before the shore, the gentle blades brushing his coat. After the long journey here, and a breif duty drip, Raniks was quite worn out. Relaxation was what he seeked now.

A few thoughts floated through his head. Minor ones, like the shading of the grass across the bank, and more major, like his ranking, what he was going to do about it tomorrow, and how possibly to be promoted. Raniks didn't want to stay the lonely scout forever. Seeing has he coudln't think of anything, he lay his head down on his paws.

'We'll see what happens yet, I suppose.'

A breif smile blessed her character, as an auburn creature slowly meandered her way down the valley, gently forcing the billowing grass to return her paws which each slow descending step toward the stream of the basin. The Alphess had come there seeking a sheltering wave of peace, to escape from the hectic duty of leader, and found herself softening, melting away the look of pure sharpness she carried about during the day. As if removing a mask, she suddenly became a creature of beauty, staring longingly into the deep stretch of indigo sky, with her awe-inspiring drops of liquid star.

So lost in moonlit heavens was she, that the wolf almost bumped into the relaxing Raniks; had Surai not dropped her head at the last moment to gaze upon the deep emerald green river of grass, she perhaps would have stumbled right over him, yet again demonstrating her unique form of grace. Thankfully, the stars smiled down on her pride that night, and guided her to merely leap backward in surprise at the charcoal male sprawled beneath.

"Oh! Sorry! Didn't see you down there, uh..." A half-scowl formed on her perplexed face. What had he said his name was again? Think Surai, think! Raski, was it? No, no... Ratskin? Definately not. Rakins! That was it, right? "Um... Rakins, did you say your name was, again?"

No. Of course not. It had a harsh dagger-like feeling on her tongue, Rakins, and she remembered the smooth melody of the sweet aforementioned name. But what in the name of the heavenly skies had it been?

"I'm sorry. That's not it, is it?"

Raniks breathed slowed as his eyes turned out across the water, watching it twist over itself and flowing amoung the reeds. It was quite peacefull, he supposed. The male let out a long wave of breath, and his lids half closed. He didn't intend to fall asleep, it was simply more comfortable. His auds were relaxed, taking in the chirping of crickets and the whisper of the wind among the plants. He didn't, however, notice the approach of the alphess. The sudden, unexpected movement of the grass beside him startled him and he shot to his feet, looking around.

"My Lady!"

He said loudly, in surprise, as he spotted Surai. He calmed down quickly. He took in her question and smiled, laughing a bit.

"No, it's, quite alright. Raniks, Miss."

Ranisk got the impression that the alphess wasn't always the most graceful of wolves. That's alright, he wasn't either. Raniks gave a short bow of his head before reclining to his haunches. He hadn't had much of a chance to talk to Surai. Well actually hadn't had much chance to talk to anyone in the pack, really. Not since he himself was made a scout.

Rich ebony paws made their careful way down the steep sides of the valley, following the playful stream. Achilles' mismatched orbs meandered aimlessly to and fro, finally following the stream's happy course as it travelled swiftly just feet from his seemingly drunken paws, sweeping over smooth rocks and tugging at drowning reeds.

The wolf's mind began to wander, and his features settled into a dreamy expression, his tongue slipping out of his jaws as he panted unconsiously. His eyes still followed the stream, and his imagination slowly poured itself into the tumbling waters. He was the water, rushing down the slope, pulled by gravity, gentley eroding. The brute thought back to the Jeweled Cascade, when the stream had gushed into thin air, crashing into the pool below with breathtaking force. He found himself closing his eyes, lost in his exciting fantasy.

With his eyes closed and his brain blank, filled only with the sounds of gurgling water, Achilles was caught completely unawares by a cheeky little rock, protruding roughly from the grassy slope. He tripped soundly over it, landing face down on the floor with a jarring crash, limbs folded messily beneath him. The hill was at its steepest, and instead of grinding to a halt, Achilles continued onwards, tumbling roughly downwards, clingy plants groping him mercillisely. His eyes screwed shut again; protection against the sharp rocks and twigs littering his disasterous path.

Finally, Aki came to a halt; the ground had levelled off. He opened his jaws and spat out a mouthful of turf, lying sprawled for a minute while he regained his senses. He was bruised and dishevelled, and soon to be horribley embarrased, but nothing more.

The male lifted his head with a groan, his eyesight blurred. Strange, distorted shapes swam before him, but as his head cleared they became more distinct, and a familiar scent caused his face to burn. He scrambled hastily to his feet, no longer at all groggy.

"Er... he-hello Surai." Achilles gushed sheepishly, dipping his head in a pathetic gesture of greeting. He settled back into a sitting position, shifting uncomfortabley, and swallowed as his eyes travelled to Raniks. He dipped his head quickly again, licking his lips, then turned his gaze to the floor, clearing his throat.

Surai nodded kindly at Raniks, promising herself to remember his title upon their next encounter. Then, sweet feminine head was tossed over her shoulder to behold the quite coordinated Achilles and his entrance. Pushing his embarressment away by pretending not to have noticed his display, she progressed into a greeting herself, dipping her crown softly. "Hello there, Aki. How goes the hunting?" A gentle hint was pressed into this statement, as if implying to if they could possibly form a group hunt, for boredom was quite easy to find lurking in the depths of the Empire.

"Oh, excuse me," she hastily shot at Raniks, realizing she hadn't introduced the two yet. "Raniks, this is Achilles. He's one of my most favored hunters. Achilles, this gentleman is Raniks. He's new here but I'm sure he'll make an excellent scout."

ooc; Ew. We need a plot.

Surai's apparent ignorance banished the blush, momentarily, from Achilles' onyx cheeks. Perhaps they didn't notice... he thought, quite stupidly, his eyes brightening. He lifted his head, and as he did so scorn, aimed at himself, filled him, and his blush rose once again. Of course they saw, eejit. Surai's simply being polite. It's a miracle that she tolerates your stupidity. This self inflicted insult caused Achilles to force his gaze downwards again, feeling thoroughly ashamed. However, Surai's next words cheered him up despite himself.

Achilles was favored by one so perfect in every aspect as the alphess Surai. Irrational pleasure coursed through him as he ran the word through his head, and he lifted his gaze once more, puffing his chest out, practically glowing with pride. He felt as a school boy, praised by an admired teacher, would when singled out from the rest of the class as a good example. The infatuated brute barely registered Surai's introduction of the stranger brute, and had to shake himself, figuratively, from his reverie before he could form an answer. Clearing his throat, he turned to Raniks, deflating his chest and donning a warm, slightly lopsided grin of welcome.

"Greetings," he said, dipping his head quickly, tail thumping the ground. He then turned back to Surai, remembering her question concerning hunting. He had been sidetracked by her praise, and so hadn't registered the inquiry before now. "Prey was plentiful, last time I checked, and I checked quite recently, m'lday. I made a kill but a few hours ago, although..." The hunter had once again drew himself up, smiling, and now he hunched over slightly, his expression clouding. "Most of it was stolen by a bear." He mumbled the sentence sullenly, disappointed that his glory had been tarnished by the disagreeable carnivore.

Surai clicked her tongue and shook her head with a sigh. "'Tis a shame, really, that our lands are so polluted by other hunters," she replied, almost comfortingly, almost scoldingly. Honey-dashed eyes concealing her inner thoughts, the she-wolf softened, her voice rich with a sweet, puppyish innocence. "But it needn't be of our concern. We'll let the filthy creatures coexist for now. After all, there are much more pressing things to deal with." There was a bit of feigned importance tossed into this, as the gentle creature sat up proudly, waving her title like a banner before them both.

Tail batting lightly at unseen insects, she turned to Raniks and gave a half-smile, as if inviting him into the conversation. "Why don't we just go for a walk, and then perhaps head back to the dens? Raniks, you are most welcome to join us, though, if you'd prefer some time alone we completely understand. It's been a rather long day."

Achilles straightened up once more, Surai's words cheering him. He nodded, puffing out his chest. He and the rest of the pack would allow the other carnivores to co-exist for now. Although Aki knew that a a single, large bear could quite easily take on three wolves, and that he and his companions had little say in whether they stayed or went, being with the confident alphess gave him a false sense of confidence - one that he knew, subconsiously, was false. But there was no harm in being proud at times.

The female's words tugged a smile onto Aki's lips. He nodded, perhaps a little too enthusiastically. Realising that the gesture had been animated, Achilles cleared his throat, rolling his shoulder and murmering a casual affirmative. He then turned to Raniks, hoping the black male would not accompany them. However scary the thought of spending time alone with the alphess was, it was one that appealed to him immensly.

"Mmm... it has been a very long day." Achilles said, widening his eyes at the brute behind Surai's back, his sentence overly emphasised.

Surai nodded appreciatively to Achilles, laughing a bit at his enthusiastic gestures. It wasn't nessacarily a scornful laugh, however, nor a hearty, drunken laugh. It wasn't the laugh of the innocence of puphood romping throughout butterfly-filled fields, brilliant eyes longing to see the rest of the world, but for that moment simply satisfied to pounce at the yellow wings of the passing insects, knowing all too well they would escape their small grasp, and yet obeying instinct anyway. Was it the fliratateous laugh the courting wolf might utter? Or the haughty laugh one who knows he is about to win a battle of valor might release?

No; 'twas none of the above. It was a Surai laugh, one of many battle scars, and yet much love to share. "Then what are we waiting for?" she replied, tail batting a bit more now that her idea was accepted. "There is plenty to see. Can you not smell the delicious scent of Autumn wafting by?" She sighed with passion, her usually murky eyes brightly visible, almost clear in the pale ribbon of moonlight encompassing her slender bod. "Where to, my friend? ... Where to?"

bic: Surai's melodious laugh sent a wave of pleasure sweeping through Achilles. His face lit up proudly, his tail thumping the leaf-covered floor. A smile spread across his lips, and he inclined his head somewhat clumsily, turning his gaze from Raniks back to the alphess.

"Where to?" He repeated, shuffling mentally through various possibilities. His eyes sparked as he settled on an idea, and an almost cunning expression flitted briefly over his features. "Perhaps the Aqua Oasis?" He suggested, his voice innocent, as he tilted his head to the side.

The Aqua Oasis was, as most wolves knew, one of the most romantic places in the Empire. A perfect setting for Achilles first proper alone time with Surai since he realised his crush. A small, happy smile settled upon his lips as he imagined the scene, eyes glazing over dreamily for a moment. Aki's sweet, almost puppish approach to romance had earned him more than one mate in his past, although he had never really settled down. Just before things began to get really serious, he would take off, tail between his legs. He feared the hard work that one had to put into a serious relationship, had problems when it came to committing himself to one she-wolf. He wanted to do so, that he knew, but for some reason he could never quite bring himself to 'tie the knot.'

Surai shrugged, and nodded, deciding not to make a real reaction on the territory Achilles chose to inhabit. It was romantic, that was known. But Achilles and her were just friends. Friends could have fun together in the Aqua Oasis without anything really happening - right? Her murky pools closed for a moment, considering. Then her lids parted once more, and the she-wolf spoke, calmly, softly. "As you wish," the Alpha replied, nodding a farewell to Raniks, and then trotting to the wolf's side. Their fur touched breifly, by accident, and almost immediately her being grew hot, and she leapt away, as if stung.

She apologized quickly. "Sorry," she mumbled. "Guess I'm just a bit jumpy tonight, eh?" The wolf began to bound ahead of Aki, tongue lolling as her powerful front limbs beat across the grass harshly, talons penetrating the earth for a better grip. Slowly, speed accumlated in her body, and a quick surge in power led her bounding up the hill eyes glancing back to see if Aki was following. "Catch me if you can, Aki!" she barked playfully, swishing her tail in a tantalizing method before continuing on in her dash towards the Oasis.

Aki watched Surai, feeling a mix of angst and excitement as she closed her eyes, seeming to mull over his suggestion. Finally, she answered in a positive fashion, and the male's muzzle split into a broad grin, his ebony dipped banner swaying blissfully. As he turned to pad off, he felt Surai's side brush his. A jolt of excitement shot through him, and he physically shuddered.

Surai made her hurried excuses, then bounded off. Achilles watched her with a happy light shining from his eyes, tongue lolling. He stood still for a moment, eyes slightly glazed, running his recent encounter with the much admired alphena through his mind. His grin broadened, and he finally set off after her, throwing pawfuls of dry autumn leaves behind him, claws tearing at the springy soil beneath them, his eyes shining with a content happiness that filled his whole being.

Soon, he was just feet from Surai, and a light-hearted, somewhat goofy laugh escaped his lips as he swung his head in a wide arc, enjoying thoroughly the adrenaline rushing through his veins, the wind tugging at his soft coat.
